Session #8 - 12 Months to Memories

Layering Made Simple: How to Add Depth Without the Clutter

Have you ever looked at a scrapbook layout and thought, “I love that… but I could never make mine look like that”?

Chances are, what you’re noticing is layering.

Layering is what gives a scrapbook page that finished, polished look—but for many scrapbookers, it can also feel overwhelming. Too many papers, too many pieces, and suddenly it feels like you’ve gone from simple to cluttered.

The good news? Layering doesn’t have to be complicated.

What Is Layering, Really?

At its core, layering is simply placing elements on top of each other in a way that adds depth and interest.

That’s it.

You don’t need a lot of products or complicated techniques—you just need a simple approach.

Start with Your Foundation

Every layered layout starts with a base:

  • your background paper

  • your photos

  • a few pieces of pattern paper (even scraps will work)

From there, you begin building outward—not adding randomly, but adding with purpose.

Keep It Simple with This Formula

If layering has ever felt intimidating, try this simple formula:

Start large — background and photo mats
Add medium pieces — patterned paper or strips
Finish small — embellishments

Working from large to small keeps your layout balanced and prevents it from feeling cluttered.

Think in Clusters, Not Scatter

One of the easiest ways to improve your layering is to group items together instead of spreading them across the page.

Try creating 2–3 small clusters:

  • near your photos

  • along a border

  • around your title

Clusters create focus and make your layout feel intentional.

Give Your Layers Room to Breathe

Layering isn’t about filling every space.

In fact, leaving a little open space helps your layers stand out even more. It gives your eyes a place to rest and keeps your layout from feeling too busy.

A Little Dimension Goes a Long Way

If you want to take your layering up a notch, try adding a bit of dimension.

Something as simple as foam squares can:

  • lift elements off the page

  • create subtle shadows

  • add visual interest without extra bulk

You Don’t Need to Overthink It

Layering isn’t about perfection—it’s about building your layout in a way that feels natural and manageable.

In Session 8 of 12 Months to Memories ~ Scrapbooking for Busy People, we break it down step-by-step so you can create layered layouts with confidence.

Because once you realize how simple layering can be…
it becomes one of the easiest ways to elevate your pages.
