How to Build an Embellishment Cluster
Add Depth, Style, and Focus to Your Scrapbook Pages
Embellishment clusters are small groupings of decorative elements that bring your scrapbook pages to life. They help draw the eye, support your story, and tie your design together. Whether you're just getting started or refining your style, use this guide to create balanced, beautiful clusters with confidence!
What’s an Embellishment Cluster?
An embellishment cluster is a group of 3 or more decorative elements arranged together on a page. They can include:
Stickers or die cuts
Journaling boxes or tags
Title pieces
Shapes (hearts, stars, circles, flowers, etc.)
Washi tape, enamel dots, gems, or other small accents
Clusters are often placed:
Near a focal photo
In a page corner to create balance
Around journaling or titles to draw attention
How to Build One: Step-by-Step
1. Start with a Base
Use a journaling box, label shape, or larger decorative piece as your foundation. This “grounds” the cluster. CM Custom Cutting System is a GREAT place to start with cluster bases.
2. Layer in 2–3 Medium Pieces
Add themed icons, word stickers, or die cuts. Overlap and tuck them slightly for a natural, layered look. Dry fit the items first. It is a good idea to take the stickiness off the stickers first, using CM Anti-stick Powder Tool.
3. Add a Pop with Tiny Accents
Finish with small details like dots, hearts, stars, or tiny flowers. These help "anchor" your cluster visually.
4. Use the Visual Triangle Rule
Create 3 clusters on your page that form a triangle. This helps the eye move naturally across your layout.
5. Repeat Elements for Cohesion
Use the same color, shape, or icon in each cluster to unify your page design.
Tips for Success
Odd numbers work best—stick to 3, 5, or 7 items in a cluster.
Vary sizes and layer pieces to create dimension.
Pop up a piece with foam squares for extra depth.
Mix textures (flat and dimensional) to keep things interesting.
Note:
The DIY Embellishment Kits featured in the video are my own custom creations. I primarily use Creative Memories products, with occasional small accents (like gems or enamel dots) from my personal stash to add extra flair.
These kits are a special customer appreciation gift for those who place a $100+ order each month through my Creative Memories Website. It’s my way of saying thank you for supporting my small business and sharing the joy of scrapbooking with me!
