Basic Scrapbook Embellishing: Finishing Your Pages

You’ve chosen your photos, added your paper, created your title, and maybe even added your journaling. But when you look at your page, you’re thinking…

“Something is missing!”

That’s where embellishing comes in.

Embellishments are the finishing touches that can add personality, draw attention to your photos, and help your page feel complete. And if you’re new to scrapbooking, you may be wondering: Where do I even start?

That’s exactly what we’re covering in this Next Step Beginners lesson.

Start Simple

The first thing I want you to know is that there are no rules! If you like how something looks on your page, it’s right for your scrapbook.

You don't need a lot of embellishments to make a beautiful page. Start with one area—your title, journaling, or a photo—and add one embellishment.

If you want to build on it, try combining a large, medium, and small element. Then experiment with tucking, overlapping, and layering your pieces.

You can even pop one piece up with foam adhesive to add a little dimension.

Don't Feel Like You Have to Fill Every Space

One of the biggest beginner mistakes is thinking every empty space needs an embellishment.

It doesn't!

Your photos and your story should remain the stars of your page. Sometimes a single sticker or a small cluster is all you need.

Before adding something else, simply step back and ask:

Does this enhance my photos?
Does it support my story?
Do I like it?

If the answer is yes, you're done!

Practice Makes It Easier

Embellishing is one of those things that gets easier the more you do it. Move things around, try different combinations, and don't be afraid to change your mind before you stick something down.

And remember—you don't have to get it perfect.

The goal is to create pages that you love and memories that feel like yours.
