Session #21 - 12 Months to Memories
12 Months to Memories – Session #21: Hip Hip Hooray!
It’s time to celebrate!
For Session #21 of 12 Months to Memories — Scrapbooking for Busy People, we’re creating a fun birthday layout—and this one has a little bit of scrapbook history behind it.
For this layout, I’m going back to an old Creative Memories 110 Scrapbooking Ideas book for our design inspiration.
A Birthday Layout From the Archives
One of the things I love about looking through scrapbooking idea books is discovering designs that still feel fresh.
The products may change.
The colors may change.
But good design is good design.
A well-balanced sketch can give you a starting point for your photos while still leaving plenty of room to make the layout your own.
That’s exactly what we’re doing with this birthday layout.
We'll use the sketch as our starting point and then add our own personality with today's Creative Memories products and embellishments.
What Makes a Birthday Layout Special?
Birthdays give us so many different kinds of photos to choose from.
Of course, there’s the traditional birthday cake and presents—but don't overlook the little moments.
Think about including:
The birthday cake
Opening presents
Decorations
Family and friends
Funny or unexpected moments
Candids from throughout the celebration
Sometimes the photo that tells the best story isn't the one where everyone is looking at the camera.
Maybe it's the expression on someone's face when they open a present.
Maybe it's the moment right before everyone sings "Happy Birthday."
Maybe it's a messy cake, a silly pose, or a completely unexpected moment.
Those are the photos that help bring the story back to life.
Don't Forget the Story
Birthdays are also a wonderful opportunity for journaling.
You don't have to write a long story. A few details can make your layout much more meaningful years from now.
Consider including:
Whose birthday was it?
What age were they celebrating?
Where did you celebrate?
Who was there?
What was their favorite part of the day?
Was there something funny or memorable that happened?
Even a few sentences can make a big difference.
Because someday, you may remember the birthday—but you might not remember the little details that made that particular birthday special.
Start With the Sketch—Then Make It Yours
Here's your permission to change things!
When you use a sketch, you don't have to follow it exactly.
Use it as a starting point.
You might have a different number of photos than the sketch shows. That's okay.
You might want to make one photo larger. Do it.
You might want to move an embellishment cluster, change the title, or use a completely different color combination.
That's the beauty of a sketch.
It takes away the "Where do I put everything?" question and gives you a framework to work from.
Then you get to make the creative decisions.
Another Memory Into the Album
We're now at Session #21 of 12 Months to Memories, and I hope you're beginning to see just how many different ways there are to approach a scrapbook page.
Sometimes we'll start with a theme.
Sometimes we'll start with a technique.
And sometimes, like this session, we'll start with a sketch and give it a fresh new life.
So pull out those birthday photos, find some supplies you love, and let's create a birthday page!
And if you have the Creative Memories book sitting on your shelf somewhere, maybe it's time to pull it out, too. And a reminder - a Brand New Sketch book is NOW available FREE with minimum purchase, check out my Creative Memories website link below. Email me if you have any questions.
You never know what great design inspiration might be waiting inside.
I'll see you for Session #21 of 12 Months to Memories!
