Session #7 - 12 Months to Memories

Session 7: Start with Photos

Photo-First Scrapbooking: The Easiest Way to Start Your Layouts

If you’ve ever sat down to scrapbook and thought, “I don’t even know where to start,” you’re not alone.

One of the most common things I hear from scrapbookers is that they feel stuck before they even begin. They look at their paper, their tools, their embellishments… and suddenly it all feels like too many choices.

That’s exactly why I love photo-first scrapbooking.

Instead of starting with paper or a design idea, you begin with what matters most — your photos.

Why Start with Photos?

Your photos already tell you what the page should be about.

They guide:

  • the story

  • the layout

  • the number of elements you need

When you start with your photos, everything else becomes easier. You’re no longer guessing—you’re simply building around what’s already there.

Step 1: Choose Your Focal Photo

Every layout benefits from having a “main” photo.

This is the image that:

  • draws your attention first

  • sets the tone for the page

  • anchors your design

Once you’ve chosen your focal photo, the rest of your photos will naturally fall into place around it.

Step 2: Group Your Photos

Instead of scattering photos across your page, try grouping them together.

This can look like:

  • a grid

  • a block

  • a loose cluster

Grouping your photos keeps your layout feeling organized and helps your story come across more clearly.

Step 3: Crop with Purpose

Cropping isn’t about cutting things out — it’s about focusing on what matters most.

Don’t be afraid to:

  • zoom in on faces

  • remove distractions

  • create consistency across your photos

Even small crops can make a big difference in how your layout looks and feels.

Keep It Simple

The goal of photo-first scrapbooking isn’t to make things complicated—it’s to make them easier.

When your photos lead the way:

  • you make fewer decisions

  • your layouts come together faster

  • your pages feel more meaningful

You Don’t Have to Overthink It

Scrapbooking doesn’t have to start with the “perfect” paper or the “perfect” design.

It can start with a memory.

And that’s exactly what we’re focusing on in Session 7 of 12 Months to Memories ~ Scrapbooking for Busy People — helping you take those photos and turn them into something you can hold, share, and enjoy.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, this is your sign to try a different approach.

Start with your photos… and see how much easier scrapbooking can feel.

Happy Scrapping!
